Regardless of the season, it is a good idea to watch for storms. Sudden wind shifts, lightning flashes and choppy water all can mean there is a storm on the horizon. If bad weather is approaching, get off the water early to avoid long waits at the boat docks.

Have a Sober Driver – Just like with a car, do not operate a boat while under the influence. A boat driver that has been drinking will have a harder time navigating the boat through rough water.

Check the Lights – It is a good idea to check the lights before the boat leave the dock and carry extra batteries. Not only will it help navigating at night. If it gets dark due to an oncoming storm, other boaters will be able to see you better.

Keep an Emergency Kit – It is always a good idea to keep an emergency kit on board. Make sure the kit is in a dry bag or floating pouch. Some things to keep in there are a cell phone, maps, flares and a first aid kit.

Tell Someone About Your Trip – It is a good idea to tell somewhere where you are going and when you will be back before taking off.
