National Boating Safety Week 2015

This is it, folks! National Safe Boating Week 2015 is officially underway. Join the crew at our Lake of the Ozarks boat dealership as we spread the word and work to make the Lake Area a safe boating location for people of all ages.

Potential Boating Hazards

Boating is locally, nationally, and globally acclaimed as a wonderful recreational activity for friends and family of all ages. The team members at Surdyke Yamaha & Marina are obviously huge believers in boating as a fun and exciting pastime, but we want to remind everyone to beware of the potential dangers that come from irresponsible boating.

When the season for boating at the Lake of the Ozarks is in full swing, hundreds (or even thousands) of boats may be out on the Lake at any one time. With so many vessels at play, it's important to be constantly alert to the potential dangers that can arise. Here is a quick list of things to watch out for:
  • Boat Drivers Who Have Been Drinking
    • Just like driving a car, driving a boat requires constant attention and alertness to your surroundings. Boaters should always have a designated captain for their vessel. It is crucial that you report any incidents of drunk boating to the Missouri State Water Patrol immediately.
  • Underage Boat Drivers
    • Boaters must be fourteen years old before they are legally allowed to operate a motorboat or a PWC on the Lake of the Ozarks, and sixteen years old before they are allowed to operate a motorboat or PWC without onboard supervision from a parent or guardian.
  • Crowded Waters
    • If you've ever been on the Lake of the Ozarks during the peak summer season, you can attest to the fact that the Lake gets incredibly busy. If you join the hundreds of weekenders who plan to get out on the water, it is critical that you remain constantly aware of your surroundings and the other vessels surrounding your boat.
  • Adverse Weather Conditions
    • You obviously have no control over the weather, but you can control whether or not you choose to go boating in adverse weather conditions. Before embarking, take a quick look at the forecast. If the weather is supposed to take a turn for the worse, plan on getting off the water before the storm hits. Heavy rain can drastically reduce visibility, and being on the water during a lightning storm can pose serious dangers.
  • Darkness
    • Boating in the daylight is a blast, but boating in the dark is very dangerous. Docks and other boats are required to be lit when it is dark outside, but it very hard to distinguish where the water ends and the land begins on the undeveloped sections of shoreline. We strongly recommend that you make plans to be safely off of the water before nightfall.
Be sure to check out our previous blog post for more boating safety tips.

Wear It Missouri!

Have you heard? National Safe Boating Week is next week, May 16th-22nd. The crew at our Lake of the Ozarks marine dealership is teaming up with local organizations to raise awareness for this important cause. We're kicking off the activities a little early this week, and we want YOU to join us!

Water Safety Day 2015

It has been estimated that fully 80% of all water-related deaths in 2014 could have been prevented simply by wearing a properly fitting life jacket. Residents are the Lake of the Ozarks are determined to prevent more accidents like this in the future and are teaming up with the national Wear it! campaign to encourage boaters to wear life jackets.

This year, we are kicking off National Safe Boating Week a little early, and we hope that you all will join us! We're having a kick-off event on Wednesday, May 13th in Jefferson City as part of the Wear It Missouri! campaign.

Boating Safety 101

The Lake of the Ozarks is a major vacation destination in the Midwest; people come from all over the surrounding states to enjoy some fun in the sun with the people they love. Boating on the Lake of the Ozarks gives both locals and vacationers alike a chance to relax and recharge - but unfortunately, boating also comes with its share of risks. This summer season, the team at Surdyke Yamaha & Marina is here to help you keep your family and friends safe with these simple (but important) boating safety tips.

1. Be Aware Of Those Around You
The Lake gets pretty busy during the summer. You should absolutely get in your own boat and join the fun, but it's important to always stay alert and be aware of all the other boats and PWCs around your own vessel. Be prepared to speed up, slow down, or move out of the way at a moment's notice.

2. Always Wear A Life Jacket
A staggering percentage of drowning accidents occurred because the victims were not wearing a life jacket. It is important to have plenty of life jackets on board and ensure that everyone wears one at all times. We recommend that infants are not brought on board until they are big enough to wear a small life jacket.

3. Don't Drink And Drive
These famous words of caution are used all the time, but they apply to boating as well as driving. Consuming alcohol impairs motor skills and slows reaction time, which greatly increases the chance of an accident. Keep yourself, your passengers, and other boaters safe by always having a designated captain for your boat.

4. Appoint A First Mate
There's a reason the big sea vessels have a captain AND a first mate. The captain must stay at the helm; he/she needs a trustworthy assistant to help them out with anything they need. Before you leave your dock, assign a (sober) passenger to assist the captain along the trip.

5. Pay Attention To The Weather
Missouri is infamous for its seemingly bipolar weather tendencies - just because it's sunny when you leave your dock does not mean that thunderstorms aren't coming. Before you head out on the water, be sure to check the forecast for the day and make sure the good weather is supposed to hold. If not, you may need to reschedule your trip for another day.

6. Learn To Swim
This one may seem obvious, but you might be surprised how many people who do not know how to swim go for boat rides every year. The odds of capsizing or being in a boating accident are low, but it can still happen. Before you head out for a fun day of boating, make sure you and your passengers are confident in your swimming capabilities.

7. Stay Alert And Use Common Sense
A safe boating season at the Lake of the Ozarks requires all captains to stay alert and use their common sense at all times. Be aware of the other boats around you, pay attention to the no-wake zones, and keep your vessel at a reasonable speed. As Yogi Bear would say, "Only YOU can prevent boating accidents!"
