This upcoming weekend at Lake of the Ozarks is going to be filled with fun events and Lake of the Ozark’s bestwatercraft dealer doesn’t want you to miss out on any of the fun! ABOUT THE SHOOTOUT

Lake of the Ozarks Shootout that is being held at Captain Ron’s Bar & Grill and the 33MM-34.5MM, August 23rd – August 27th, 2017 will bring the top racers and off shore racing power boats from across the country, topping 244 MPH. The largest unsanctioned boat race in the Midwest with over 100 racers and 100,000 spectators. Proceeds will benefit the Lake Area Rescue Teams, and other charitable organizations!

HISTORY OF THE SHOOTOUT

The Lake Rescue Shootout started in 1988 as an event in which many local boats participated simply to establish who had the fastest boat. As the years went by it became a bigger and bigger event that also helped supplement the Lake Area Fire Departments water rescue efforts.

If you will be traveling to the events by boat, keep in mind the navigation restrictions the Missouri State Highway Patrol has released. Below you will find a link to the press release that outlines the restrictions and no wake zones for boaters. Save yourself a headache and read through the restrictions before heading out for the weekend.

With all the activity on the Lake, it’s best to take precautions and to boat safely to avoid any accidents or problems. Here are a few boating safety tips to keep in mind while you’re out on the water this weekend:
  • You should have a sober drive on board the boat at all times. This person should also know how to properly operate the boat.
  • Always be aware of your surroundings. There will be a lot of watercraft on the Lake this weekend, while you may be safe and making smart decisions, other boaters may not be.
  • Make sure you do not exceed the number of passengers allowed on your boat.
  • Wear your life jacket, especially while participating in any water sports. Children should always be wearing a life jacket while on a boat.

Don't Get Your Boat Rocked in a Thunderstorm

Have you ever thought about what would happen if you ran into a thunderstorm while out boating? We don’t know when it will happen, where it will happen, or how long it will last. Thunderstorms can be extremely unpredictable, so it’s best to be prepared. Surdyke Yamaha, the Lake of the Ozark’s best watercraft dealer wants you to stay safe if you run into a thunderstorm while out on the boat. We have put together a list of tips to keep in mind in case you get stuck in an unfortunate weather scenario.

Boaters should never venture out if thunderstorms are a possibility – thunderstorms are one of the more common dangers to boaters because they can develop so quickly. If you are out on the water and you notice storms that are approaching, you should return to land or shelter as soon as possible. If you are unable to return to land, you should stay inside the cabin and avoid any metal or electrical devices. If your boat does not have a cabin, try to stay as low as possible.

Monitor the forecast – this is crucial to boating safely because the weather can change quickly. This could leave boaters in a bad situation, especially if they aren’t properly prepared. Download a weather app on your phone and set up alerts in your area. This way, you will be notified when a potential thunderstorm is headed your way.

Top free weather apps:
1. Weather Underground
2. RainAware
3. The Weather Channel
4. NOAA Weather Radar

Make your boating plans known – make sure someone knows that you are out boating and where you are headed to. This way, in case a storm rolls in and you are unable to return, someone will know where you are. You can also download an app that provides you with your GPS coordinates which you can then send them.

Here are a few like:
1. My GPS Coordinates
2. GPS Tracks
3. GPS & Maps: Track Coordinates, Compass + Waypoints

Be prepared before you leave the dock – knowing how to dock a boat or perform a close-quarters maneuver near the shore can be extremely difficult, especially if the wind is blowing. If necessary, take a boating safety course. You should also have a firm grasp on how to read weather.

Make sure you have the proper equipment –

Life Jackets -  the U.S. Coast Guard requires that all recreational vehicles must carry one Coast Guard approved life jacket per person on board. Regardless of the weather, it’s always important to wear a life jacket.

Proper Communication Equipment – a VH-FM radio is an important thing to have on your boat. Yes, a cell phone is good too, but those are unreliable and you might not have service in some areas.

Backup Power Source – this is always a great idea to keep on board. You never know when you may need it.

Extra food and water – you should always keep extra water and nonperishable food on board in case of emergencies, or just in case you get hungry.

Key Indicators of Changing Weather
  • A sudden drop in temperature
  • Increasing wind or sudden change in wind direction
  • Flat clouds getting lower and thicker
  • Heavy static on your AM radio - this can be a sign of nearby thunderstorms
If You Get Caught in a Storm
  • Reduce your speed - keep enough power to make headway
  • Head the boat at a 45-degree angle into the waves
  • Make sure everyone on board is wearing a life jacket
  • Turn on your running lights
  • Keep the bilges free of water
  • If absolutely necessary, anchor the boat

Operating a boat in a thunderstorm is completely different than operating a boat in sunny and 80-degree weather. Hopefully with these tips and a boating safety course, you will be prepared in case you ever run into a thunderstorm when you are out boating. With Labor Day Weekend being one of the biggest boating weekends at the lake, Surdyke Yamaha wants to make sure you have the best time out on the water. From boating all day, to watching the fireworks from your boat at night, we have you covered with some helpful tips for this Labor Day Weekend.

Watching firework shows from the water is an incredible experience. Below is a list of Labor Day firework shows you can watch from your boat.

Bear Bottom Resort
Saturday, September 2nd @ 9:45pm

Labor Day Weekend will be a busy time out on the Lake. Here are a few helpful tips to make sure you are prepared.

(1) Stay hydrated – this is something people often forget about. Being out on the water all day under the hot sun can easily dehydrate you. If you’re not drinking enough water, or any water at all, your fun won’t last long.

Helpful hint: Keep a water bottle with you and in plain sight so you remember to stay hydrated.

      (2) Pack ahead of time – there is nothing more stressful than running around the house at the last minute, trying to make sure you packed everything. Pack your items ahead of time, this will keep you from forgetting any important items you may need.

Helpful hint: In order to make sure you packed everything, create a list to follow. Mark things off once you have packed them. If you visit the lake often, keep this list for future use.

      (3) Stay safe – Labor Day Weekend is a busy time on the water. Make sure you know the rules and are well prepared. If you’re going to be drinking, make sure you have a designated driver for the boat.

Helpful hint: Before you head out onto the lake, you should make sure your boat is in proper working condition. Check your fuel levels and make sure your lights are working properly, especially if you are going to stay out at night to watch the fireworks from your boat.

Don’t have your own boat? No problem! Here at Surdyke Yamaha we offer boat rentals. We have a wide selection of rentals that suit almost everyone’s needs. Why wait?
