5 Fast Maintenance Checks For Your Street Bike

There is no greater feeling than the wind in your hair and the open road ahead of you. With over 140,936 Missourians owning a bike, apparently we're not the only ones who think so! Surdyke Yamaha takes great pride in providing you with the best street bikes in the Lake of the Ozarks for you to enjoy all year long! What do you do, though, if you've skipped a few maintenance checks and now you and your bike are dealing with something bigger than a simple check? Surdyke Yamaha has the best motorcycle service center at the Lake of the Ozarks and we'd love to help get you back on the road! Here are a few easy maintenance checks that will help keep you on the road for many miles to come.

Tires

This seems like a no-brainer, but you really must triple check that you have the correct tires on your bike, and make sure the pressures are correct. There are plenty of horror stories out there about bikes with incorrect tires, and we don't want you to fall victim to this. Every time your wheel turns and they are under-inflated, a larger-than-normal part of the tire is distorted into a flatter contact patch. Distorting extra rubber takes energy from your bike's engine and converts that into heat. The power that should be propelling you down the highway is now being wasted in heating up your tire. Before you head out, always check the pressure while the tires are cool and use the recommended pressure in the manual.

Oil & Filter Change

Keeping the oil changed in your motorcycle is the single most important and cost-effective maintenance to be performed on your ride. Old oil can drain power from your engine and accelerate the wearing process.

Air Filter

When your engine's air filter is clogged with dust, grit and water from the combustion chamber, you are making your engine work harder. A dirty filter can also affect the air/fuel mixture on carbureted bikes cause the engine to run rich, wasting gas and reducing peak power output.  A new air filter only costs a couple bucks, or you can clean it by blowing it out with an air compressor. The idea is to make sure you get it clean, allowing your motor to breathe easier.

Chain & Sprockets

Lubricating little and often is the idea when taking care of your chains and sprockets. A worn, dried-out drive chain will soak up a heap of power. Also be sure to do a regular, deep-cleaning on your chains with a chain cleaner to get all the power-sapping gunk, grit and grime out. Missing sprocket teeth and rusty, kinked chains can make it impossible to transfer power from the counter shaft to the rear wheel.

Brakes

Your brakes are SUPPOSED to stop you, but if they aren't cared for and checked regularly, they can bind and drag which will drain your power. You can check the brakes by lifting it on a rear stand and trying to spin both wheels, one at a time. The rear will have some drag from the chain, but the front should spin pretty freely. If you feel ANY drag, you'll want to have them looked at. Don't forget to have this important detail checked!

These five checks will help keep you on the road, enjoying every bit of summer that you have left! We can help you with any maintenance questions you have, along with parts you may need. We have an extensive online motorcycle parts store, so when you're looking for parts for your new bike, or something aftermarket, be sure to visit http://www.yamahaktmparts.com/index.htm. Our showroom has a vast selection of Yamaha bikes at the Lake of the Ozarks, but whether you're looking for something on the water, land or road, we have something that will add more adventure to your life. Stop in and let our team show you what life can look like when you're having fun.

6 Things You NEED When Purchasing a WaveRunner

You've done your research and paid your money, now comes the FUN part! You get to hit the open water and play on your new WaveRunner! Don't get out there just yet though, you still need a few more things in order to have a fun and safe time out on the water. We have the best WaveRunners at the Lake of the Ozarks to pick from, and we want to make sure you are properly prepared before heading out. That's why we're including these six must-haves in the sale of our new 2014 WaveRunner models!

Trailer

If you have the option to get a trailer, always take it. A trailer may seem optional to some, but it really is necessary. Even if you are docking your WaveRunner, you will most likely need to move it at some point. You don't want to be in a pinch for a trailer later and not be able to get one.

Life Jackets

When adventuring out on the lake, you really must have a life jacket. It is against the law to not wear your life jacket when out on your WaveRunner. Not only that, but 79% of people who were killed in boating accidents were not wearing their life jacket. You'll want to make sure that the one you wear will fit you well, so you ought to try them on to find the perfect fit. You'll also want a variety of other sizes for when you take guests out.

Cover

A cover for your WaveRunner is a necessity that you don't want to skip out on. Whether you store your WaveRunner in a building or out at the dock, you will want a cover to protect it. When making an investment like this, it is always worth it to invest just a little more to protect it from damage, dirt, and weather.

Ropes

You want to be able to tie your WaveRunner at the dock when you're done, and you want to make sure and have the right ropes or dock lines to do so. Surdyke Yamaha is a great place to get your WaveRunner accessories at the Lake of the Ozarks. We have an online store where you can find accessories, or we would love for you to come visit us and let us help you find what you need.

Bumpers

Bumpers are a must when you are at the dock. They will protect your watercraft from getting damaged. You should really have two bumpers and 2 bumper lines to be prepared.

Fire Extinguisher

Boats and PWC can potentially be a fire hazard. The motors or the fuel systems are extremely flammable with the gasoline, oil and grease, so you'll want a fire extinguisher that can handle that possibility. Though you can't carry it with you while on your WaveRunner, you can keep it with you at your dock. You can also carry it in your vehicle as part of your lake day supply kit. Don't be caught un-prepared.

WaveRunner Promotion

When you purchase any new 2014 WaveRunner at Surdyke Yamaha you also get everything we mentioned above: a trailer, cover, 2 life jackets, 2 ropes, 2 bumpers, a fire extinguisher, AND a full tank of gas! We have the best boat services at the Lake of the Ozarks and can help you with any questions that arise. From bottom paint, de-winterizations, boat storage and slip rental, we are here for you and your needs. Now is the time to buy, so swing down to our showroom and let us help you start making memories on the Lake!

Safety Tips for the Holiday Weekend

Fourth of July is a HUGE weekend at the Lake of the Ozarks. Both vacationers and locals will be getting their boats and water toys out on the Lake to celebrate. With all of the rain we've received, it's important to be careful while partaking in all of your holiday activities this weekend. Ameren has made it known that the Lake will not be closed to traffic, though they and the water patrol are asking everyone to use caution when they're out on the water. Here are a few tips to keep in mind as you enjoy your weekend on the water.

Watch For Debris

High water means there will be much more debris in the Lake, as the rain rushes branches, leaves and trash down into the water. The debris isn't limited to just small items either! The murky brown water can also be hiding logs, downed trees, and hay bales. These can cause serious damage to boats and PWCs, along with causing injuries to people as they're playing in the water.

Watch Your Wake

Big wakes can cause expensive damage to docks. Ameren and Highway patrol are asking that boaters run at idle speed to prevent large waves from causing continued damage to the docks, seawalls and yards.

Beware of Docks

If owners do not shut off the power, partially submerged docks can mean more electric current in the water. It's important to be aware of electricity in the water! If you suspect there are electrical currents in the water around you, do not swim back to the dock or land. Have someone come out and get you.

Happy Fourth of July from the Team at Surdyke Yamaha!

The water has stabilized thanks to the dam gates being open to full capacity. The plan is to keep the gates open as long as it take to prevent the waters from rising any higher. While you're out this weekend, be sure to be aware and stay safe. Remember that Surdyke Yamaha is here for all of your boating needs - including the best gas dock on the Lake of the Ozarks. We also have a great selection of the best boats at the Lake of the Ozarks and we would love to get you out on the water in the boat of your dreams! Have a wonderful Fourth of July weekend and don't forget to visit us!
