4 Ways To Beat The Heat On Your Yamaha Bike

Summer is the best time to ride your Surdyke Yamaha street bike. However, the heat can sometimes get the best of you. The summers not over yet and there are still plenty of time left to ride. The Midwest's best motorcycle dealer is here to give you tips on how you can stay cool while riding your bike this summer:

1. Drink Plenty of Water

This one may be obvious, but it is easy to forget to stay hydrated while on a long ride. Make sure you bring plenty of water. In fact, you should bring more water than you think you'll need. You do not want to be on a long ride and run out of water with nowhere to stock up on more. It is also important to drink plenty of water before taking off on your bike. The rule of thumb is that you should consume one liter of water every hour, especially in extreme temperatures.

2. Know The Signs of Heat Exhaustion and Heat Stroke

Your body will know when it's having trouble with the heat. Warning signs of heat exhaustion can include cramps, nausea, headaches, extreme fatigue, flushed or pale skin, dizziness and heavy sweating. If you are feeling any of these symptoms, pull over, rehydrate, rest and recover for as long as it takes to recuperate. Do not rush getting back on the bike because if heat exhaustion is allowed to develop into heat stroke, you could be in big trouble. When you get heat stroke, your cooling system shuts down and you body temperature can rise to up to 105 degrees, Sometimes it is possible to pass out, which is not something you want to do while riding.

3. Take Frequent Stops to Cool Off

One of the best ways to cool off during long rides is to include stops that are in a cooler environment, such as convenience stores, rest stops or restaurants. This is can also be a great chance to meet interesting people on your journey. A quick stop can make the world of difference on a long ride, especially in extreme heat.

4. Dress Appropriately

This is a simple advice that many people often don't follow. You may think that wearing a short sleeve t-shirt will help you cool off quicker, but that is not the case. Any areas of the skin that's exposed is much harder to cool, as the sweat will evaporate as the air rushes over it at high speed, which means you can dehydrate faster. On a motorcycle it's wise to wear abrasion and impact resistant gear, which we know can get heavy. However, there are mesh ventilated textile riding gear that you can wear, as well as the traditional leather riding jacket.
