Fun Christmas Traditions From Around the World

There are many different ways that people celebrate this fun holiday. While some traditions stay the same, like food, family and St. Nick, there are many aspects that are unique to different parts of the world. From waiting until January and celebrating a "good witch" who brings gifts, to some areas who don't even know about Christmas. Check out these interesting Christmas facts to help get you in the Christmas spirit.

China

Christmas is not widely celebrated in China. A few of the larger cities may celebrate the holiday with trees, lights and decorations, but the majority of rural areas don't know about it. Ironically, most Christmas decor is made in China, but they may not even know what they're making!

France

Merry Christmas in French is "Joyeux Noël". They use nativity cribs to decorate their homes throughout December, and nativity figures are sold at the fairs around town. Yule logs, made out of cherry wood are burned in their homes throughout the night in case Mary and Jesus happened to come through. The large Christmas meal is eaten late Christmas Eve or early Christmas morning after Mass, and could consist of roasted turkey with chestnuts, roast goose, oysters, foie gras, lobster, venison, and cheese.

Germany

A large part of German celebrations at Christmas is the Advent calendar. They can be made of many different materials, from paper to fir wreaths. Christmas trees are also a big part of their celebration, and in many cases are decorating secretly by the mother. While we normally think that the glass pickle tradition is from Germany, many Germans haven't heard of it. Between Christmas and New Years, the famous ski jumping "Four Hills Tournament" happens in Germany and Austria.

Italy

Family's spend this holiday together eating and enjoying each other. Christmas Eve is generally it is a day of fasting, ended by a light meal in the evening. Though the biggest celebration happens on January 6th, for Epiphany with La Befana, a kind old witch. The tale says that she followed the wise men around looking for the baby Jesus and then got lost, so she checks every home looking for him and leaving gifts along the way.

Preparing Your Motorcycle For Winter

The temps are dropping and winter is showing signs of its arrival. If you haven't already winterized your bike, now is the time to do it. Even if you have already prepared your bike for hibernation, there are a few things that you'll need to remember to do even throughout the winter season. A little bit of maintenance through the year can save you a lot of headache in the Spring when you're ready to ride. Check out these tips to help get your bike stored properly, and keep it in good condition till you can take it on the road again.

5 Steps for Winterizing Your Motorcycle

1. Clean Your Bike

It may seem redundant to clean a bike and then put it away where no one can see it, but it's important to get all of the surfaces clean. Give you bike a good wash down and dry everything off, you can also use a leaf blower to get all of the nooks and crannies dry. If bug guts and water spots sit on the surface of the paint, it can speed up the corrosion process. After all of the water is dry, wax down your bike to protect from and future moisture. Did you know that the "WD" in  WD-40 stands for water displacement? You can use WD-40 on all exposed surfaces of your bike to displace water and protect.

2. Check the Fluids, Change the Oil, and Replace Filters

It's better for your bike to hibernate with clean oil in it's system than dirty, broken down oil. Plus, if you change your oil now, your bike will be ready to ride in the Spring. You can also consider removing the spark plugs and putting a little squirt of oil in the holes, then turn the engine over a few times. This will help coat the cylinder walls. Once everything is coated you can replace the spark plugs.

3. Prepare Your Fuel System for Winter

Untreated gas, left in your fuel over long periods of time can get gunky. Protect your tank by adding fuel stabilizer to the gas. You can even ride down to the gas station and fill your bike up, add the stabilizer and then on the ride home it will mix and run through your fuel system. You can pick up a bottle of stabilizer here at Surdyke Yamaha, as well as any other bike accessories you may have forgotten about.

4. Care For Your Battery

You don't want to leave your battery plugged in all winter long, as it will cause the battery to self-discharge. You can either pull the battery out and store it in a cool dry place, or you can get a battery tender at Surdyke Yamaha. The tender keeps the battery topped off without overcharging, and you can use the tender while the batter is still left in the bike all winter long.

5. Protect Your Tires

If left unattended for the entire winter season, you tires can develop flat spots from sitting in one place for too long. There are a few ways you can protect your tires through this season, the first is to get some good motorcycle stands at Surdyke Yamaha. At the very least you need a rear wheel stand to keep the back wheel off the concrete, but we also recommend having a motorcycle center stand to keep both wheels up simultaneously. If you don't get any stands for your bike, it's best to go out at least once a month and roll it forward or backward a few inches. If you will be storing your bike on a concrete surface, remember that moisture from the concrete can also damage your wheels. The best way is with any of the stands we've mentioned above, or by putting pieces of carpet or plywood down under each wheel.

Don't be like this guy...

5 Myths About Financing a New Boat

One of the greatest things about living at the Lake of the Ozarks is the LAKE OF THE OZARKS. People travel from all over the country to vacation, play and relax on this Lake. When you own a boat the possibilities for fun are endless. From wakeboarding to cruising down the main channel, you can enjoy so many different aspects of the Lake when you have a boat. If you've always thought the dream of owning a boat is too far out of reach — think again.

There are many myths floating around about buying and financing a new boat, but don't believe everything you hear. We're going to dispel a few of the myths, and who you that buying a new boat is easier and more affordable than ever.

Myth: I can't afford a new boat.

Fact: Just as you can finance a car, you can finance your boat. By choosing to finance, you have opened the possibility of getting a nicer and larger vessel than if you were trying to save on your own. Another interesting fact is that financing is becoming much more affordable. Depending on your individual circumstances (credit score, income, and choice of boat), sometimes the monthly payment can be less than $300.

Myth: My credit score is too low

Fact: Your credit score is only too low if you have NO credit score - and even then, you're not entirely out of options. Many finance companies can work with your individual situation to make financing a possibility. In fact, there are a few companies who can even work with bad credit. Every situation is different, and your credit score can impact the monthly payments, but you are not out of options.

Myth: I can't afford a down payment.

Fact: The down payment is based on the age, type and price of the boat you are buying, as well as your own credit profile. Marine lenders are typically looking for 10%-20% down on a boat. Though sometimes there are discounts available through the dealership.

Myth: My trade-in is too old to make it worth my while.

Fact: You'll never know until you actually try! Many marinas will accept boats that are older, as long as their in good condition. After you let the marina inspect your boat, they can give you an estimate, and if you're lucky, it could cover the cost of your down payment! If you want to trade a pre-owned boat at the Lake of the Ozarks, give us a call!

Myth: I may be able to finance a boat, but I can't afford the extras that I want.

Fact: When you start the process of financing your boat, many lenders will also include the total price of the extras you want. From mooring covers to depth finders, you can generally have that included in your financing. As an added bonus, some lenders will also include your sales tax in the financing as well. Be sure to ask these questions when you start looking at financing.

The Side x Side Takeover

Side by sides are taking over the market at an alarming speed. They've gone from being utility vehicles, to the luxury sedan of off-roading. At Surdyke Yamaha, we carry several different brands in utility and sport side-by-sides from Yamaha, Odes and Hammerhead. These units range in style and functionality, and because of this flexibility, you'll find that a side-by-side will make an ideal addition to your family. Here are some interesting facts about side-by-sides, as well as a few of our favorite models!

Side-By-Side History

They started out decades ago as handy vehicles for farmers and builders to haul things like lumber and fertilizer. But now, with as many as six seats, roll bars, seat belts and cushy bucket seats, so-called side-by-sides have become the luxury sedan of off-roading. They are so popular with families and baby boomers that they are on pace to soon outsell their smaller and better-known cousins, ATVs.

How to Get Your Boat Ready For Winter

Winterizing your boat at the Lake of the Ozarks could the difference between enjoying the water next year or being landlocked for a time. In fact, winter can be harder on your watercraft than summer! Being consistently used allows the pieces to stay pliable and the systems lubricated. When stuck in your shed all winter everything is given the chance to get hard, or even worse - rusted. Here are a few things you'll want to do to make sure that you don't have any unnecessary hiccups next Spring when you're ready to take the boat out.

Clean the Machine

A clean boat is going to handle it's vacation better than one that hasn't been cleaned. Be sure to get the top sides, bottom and deck, plus you can clean all of the hardware and trim. If you're feeling extremely productive you can put a coat of wax on the topsides too! Give your boat a look over, walk around it and inspect for anything that may look suspicious. If you have a fiberglass boat, check for any blistering in the, and be sure to treat and repair the problems. Don't forget to show some love to your Bimini tops, spray hoods and windscreens while you're cleaning too!

Flush and Prepare Your Systems

If you have an inboard or stern drive boat with a raw water cooling system, be sure to thoroughly flush and clean the engine with fresh water to remove dirt and corrosion. We may not live in an extreme climate here at the Lake of the Ozarks, but it can get cold through out the winter. You may want to consider running anti-freeze into the cooling system. Your outboard motor can be flushed with freshwater and all water should be drained from the engine.

Treat Your Engine Right

When you treat your engine properly, it will treat you properly, by continuing to run longer and fuss less. Taking time to clean out your outboard motors will help reduce build up, as well as protect the internal engine components. Do you have questions about how to winterize your outboard motor? Give us a call or shoot us an email, we'd love to help you out.

Check the Engine Oil

You winterizing checklist should include a healthy dose of oil. You'll want to change the oil and the filter on stern drive, inboard engines, and four-stroke outboards. You'll want to make sure that the engine is slightly warmed up to help clear out the sediment with the discarded oil.

Cut Down on Moisture

Check the bilges and removed any standing water, clean up any dirt or oil as well. You'll want to make sure and do this with the lockers, drawers, live wells, fish holds, and storage areas. Clean these areas completely by removing all objects, and then placing commercial moisture absorbents to eliminate mold and mildew. Remove all of the cushions and clean them well, especially underneath, and prop them up on the edge to let the air dry them out and circulate.

Remove and Store

Don't leave any unnecessary "stuff" on board your vessel throughout the winter. If it can be removed, this is a good time to do so. Life jackets, dock lines, fire extinguishers, flares, fenders, skit ropes, and any other gear you tote around on the boat should be cleaned and removed. This will help to eliminate the areas that dust and moisture can gather in the storage areas.

The End of Boating Season is Near...or Is It?

If you're bemoaning the fact that it's about time to put the boat away for the winter - think again! Our units do still need winterized, but if you want to continue using your boat for longer, we can help with that. If you are going to stop using it for any period of time though, you must winterize your units. From new fishing boats at the Lake of the Ozarks, to pre-owned wave runners, we have just the toys you need to enjoying boating at the Lake of the Ozarks. Come in and visit our showroom and let our friendly staff introduce you to a unit that will add much joy to your life!
