MOTOR BIKES vs DIRT BIKES: What’s the Difference?
Are you trying to figure out the difference between
two-wheeled vehicles? Or are you just trying to figure out which vehicle is
best for you and your needs? Before going into your local powersports dealer near
mid-Missouri, you’ll want to know the difference between dirt bikes and
motorcycles. That way your dealer will be able to help you find a vehicle best
suited for you.
It does get confusing trying to decipher different vehicles because different terms are thrown around and used interchangeably when referring to any type of powersport bike. Since the two look the same and have similar parts, everyone assumes they’re the same. Surdyke Yamaha is excited to present you with the distinction between these two bikes.
Dirt Bikes
Crazy enough, just like the name, dirt bikes are made for
off-roading and rougher terrain. That’s why you’ll notice that dirt bikes have
knobby tires. Another characteristic that helps it endure bumpier conditions is
its suspension. The suspension is what catches the shock and weight of the bike
when going over terrain and hilly areas.
However, with these characteristics, this does make dirt
bikes lighter and overall, less stable. Although this may seem like a
disadvantage on the road, it’s actually a great advantage on the trails. Dirt
bikes are made to maneuver easier, hence why they have wide handlebars for a
higher range for steering and sharper brakes.
Motorcycles
As you can probably tell from the dirt bike’s description,
motorcycles are made for quite a different purpose. Motorcycles are
manufactured for street riding. You’ll notice right off the bat that they have
smooth tires, shorter handlebars, and quite a bit less suspension than that of
a dirt bike. When riding on smooth and paved roads, these characteristics of a
motorcycle make the ride smoother and easier.
On the other hand, something that people normally do not
notice is that motorcycles’ seats lean back, whereas dirt bikes are forced to
sit upright. This is due to the kind of impact the vehicle takes. Dirt biking
requires riders to lean forward into bumpy conditions, whereas it’s more
dynamic and comfortable for motorcyclists to lean back while riding.
Understanding the difference in how these bikes are used
also increases the safety while riding it. The way the bikes are designed are
specifically to help you in specific conditions. When visiting your local
dealer, make sure you have in mind what kind of conditions and usage you’ll be
getting out of your bike. Surdyke
Yamaha can’t wait to see you on roads or on trails!
