We're thankful for the opportunity to show our support on such a momentous day! A Brief History of Memorial Day We thought it appropriate to include a little history of Memorial Day so that we can all gain a better understanding of the upcoming holiday. Originally known as Decoration Day, this holiday was first celebrated in 1868 as a day to decorate the graves of fallen civil war soldiers with flowers. New York was the first state to celebrate Decoration Day, and the rest of the northern states quickly followed suit. The southern states agreed to participate after World War I, at which point the name changed to Memorial Day and the observances expanded to include every American man and woman who had died fighting in any war.
