TIPS FOR MAINTAINING YOUR ATV THIS WINTER!
The sun is still shining, but the leaves are changing and the temperatures are cooling down which makes it the perfect time for hitting the trails with your ATV! Although it seems like winter is far off, it is only a few short months away, and we at Surdyke Yamaha would like to provide you with some tips for maintaining your ATV during these cold months.
ENJOYING YOUR ATV DURING THE WINTER
There is plenty of fun to be had with your ATV during the cold winter months, but there are some things you need to do to make sure things run smoothly.
BE PROACTIVE:
Plan ahead to have your ATV ready for winter conditions. Routing maintenance during the course of the year is great, but there are some things to consider when the cold weather hits.
BATTERY:
Using a trickler or smart charger is necessary if you plan to keep the battery in your ATV during the winter months. Colder temperatures can ruin the batteries quickly, which can be expensive to replace. If you don't currently have or plan to buy one of these, we highly recommend taking your battery off and bringing it indoors to keep it warm.
FUEL & OIL:
Keep your ATV free from moisture in the fuel tank and lines, which can happen during the cold months when the temperature drops and condensation forms. Adding a fuel stabilizer to your gas will keep things fresh and your engine running smoothly.
Oil is key to the performance of your engine, so be sure that your oil is fresh and the filter is clean.
TIRES:
If you are planning to ride your ATV in the snow and ice, letting a little air out of your tires will help with traction. There are also studded tires available for ice and snow, or you can use chains on your existing tires to help with traction.
STORING YOUR ATV DURING WINTER
KEEP IT CLEAN & COVERED:
Before storing your ATV for the winter, give it a good cleaning to prevent rust from dirt buildup. If you don't have a garage to store your machine in, invest in a cover to protect it from the elements.
FUEL:
To prevent the gas from going bad during the months when it isn't being used, it's a good idea to use a stabilizer. Be sure to run the engine to get the stabilizer evenly distributed through the fuel lines.
TIRES:
Tires tend to lose air during cold weather and when they aren't being used on a regular basis. Ensure that there is plenty of air in the tires before storing, and try not to have your ATV resting on cold ground or concrete.
