Safety Tips for Riding Your ATV in the Cold!

It's not quite Winter yet here at the Lake of the Ozarks but we have certainly encountered some pretty cold weather already! For many of you, a little cold weather isn't going to stop you from getting your ATV out! Riding ATVs at the Lake of the Ozarks is a popular activity during the colder months. ATVs are no doubt a lot of fun but they can be dangerous if you're not careful, especially during colder months. That's why the team at Surdyke Yamaha in Osage Beach, MO has put together a list of five safety tips for riding your ATV in the colder months, check it out!

Make Your ATV Winter Weather Ready

In most cases, we don't have to worry about any snow in November but we've already experienced quite the snow storm this year. We might be in for a cold winter with lots of snow and ice, so it's best to be prepared. Before taking your ATV out in snow and/or ice, it's critical to prep your vehicle for the extreme conditions it is about to face. Your best bet is to purchase winter-ready tires with deep tread for your ATV, but at the very least you should wrap your existing tires in ATV tire chains. Depending on your ATV, it might also be a good idea to install a windshield in order to cut down on the wind chill you and your passengers will experience.

Keep Yourself Warm

This is the biggest and most important key to ATV winter safety. Dress in layers and cover up as much exposed skin as possible. Gloves, scarfs, thick socks, and hats are crucial! We have a great selection of Yamaha Jackets in our store and on our website!

Keep Your ATV Warm

Did you know there are things you can do to actually make your ATV warmer? It's time to consider investing in heated grips for your ATV to keep your hands warm. Purchasing a seat warmer is also a good idea. Once you experience riding your ATV with these heated devices, you'll never want to ride without them again!

Respect Mother Nature

When it comes to riding your ATV in snowy or icy conditions, the biggest mistake you can make is assuming you are invincible. Exercise caution at all times - especially if you are riding next to a steep ravine or across a cove in the Lake that has frozen over. Hidden holes or crevasses can be extremely dangerous to ATV riders. Be careful!

Prepare For The Worst

When taking your ATV out for a spin in the extreme cold, it's important to always be prepared for the worst. You're obviously not expecting to wreck your ATV or to get stuck somewhere, but you should always bring along a few essentials to protect yourself in the event of an accident. At the very least, the Surdyke Yamaha team recommends you bring:
  • A blanket
  • A flashlight
  • A whistle
  • Food and water
  • Cell phone
  • Ziploc bags (to keep essentials dry)
