Mid-Summer Boat Maintenance

As we near the end of July, we’re sure your boat has gotten its fair share of use so far this summer! In order to keep your boat up and running through the rest of the season, there are a few midsummer maintenance checks you should do. As your trusted boat dealer at the Lake of the Ozarks, Surdyke Yamaha is here to help you prevent any future problems and make your investment last as long as possible. By using these tips and doing these maintenance checks, your boat is sure to keep on providing fun for you and your family for years to come.

LIGHTS

Just like with a car, you can’t drive at night without your lights. But in this case, your boat’s lights used so other boats can see you. Your lights should be used when away from the dock between sunset and sunrise or during times of restricted visibility. Be sure to check and clean your lights regularly to make sure they are in working condition and visible. The red and green sidelights should be visible from at least 2 miles away on a dark, clear night.

DOCK LINES

Your dock lines should still be in working condition. Replace any old, stiff, or breaking dock lines or rope that you have aboard. You should also check the anchor line, chain shackles, and splices for any damage or wear that might need attention. There’s no exact timeline for when these items should be replaced, so it’s up to you to keep an eye on them.

AIR-OUT

Getting your boat up and out of the water every once in a while allows the boat to breathe. On a dry and windy day, open everything up, including the top. Airing out the outside of your boat can reduce the chance for mildew and corrosion. This is also important for the inside of your boat. Taking the cover off your boat for a few hours allows the inside to air-out, reducing the risk of mold and a musky smell.

EXTERIOR

It’s a good idea to have your boat detailed throughout the summer, but not just to keep it looking nice! All of the elements, but especially the hot sun, can have negative effects on your boat and Bimini top. If you keep up with the cleaning and maintenance now, there will be less work for you down the road.

BILGE PUMPS

Most mid-season failure occurs from the bilge pumps being clogged. Keeping your pumps clean is vital to the successful running of your boat, and most pumps can actually be popped out of their holder to be cleaned. Be sure to also check the screens for debris.

Although these are just a few tips to help keep your boat in tip-top shape for the rest of the summer, it’s important to also bring your boat in for routine maintenance done by professionals. Because of this, Surdyke Yamaha has two watercraft service locations to serve YOU. We have the factory-approved parts, tools, and diagnostic equipment to keep your unit running perfectly.
