CATFISH
The best time to fish for catfish is the summer. Though blue catfish can be caught year-round, April through September are the hottest months for the common channel catfish. The blue catfish is the largest species of catfish in North America, and the average length is from 25-46 inches. The population is stable, but a slot limit was put into effect in 2014, protecting blue catfish from 26-34 inches. Channel catfish is the most numerous catfish species in North America, and it’s the official fish of Missouri. The “channel cat” is one of the common fish used for fish-fry's around the Lake of the Ozarks.BASS
The Lake of the Ozarks contains several different species of bass. The white bass is one of the most important game fish in Missouri. The white bass can reach up to 17 inches, but the average length is between 9 and 15 inches. This fish is located not only in the Lake of the Ozarks but also in the rest of the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers. The largemouth bass, also referred to as the bigmouth bass and the lineside bass, spawn from mid-April through late May or early June. They prefer still water and can live up to 15 years. The white crappie is the most common of its species in the Lake of the Ozarks. The fish is perch-like, but it is actually a sunfish. Though they can be seen at all times of the day, the fish are more active during the evening and night. The white crappie is arguably the most important game fish in the state. Though the Lake contains black crappie, it is not near as abundant as its silver counterpart. The white crappie reigns supreme when it comes to fishing, due to its large size and ease of catching.OTHER
With over 200 species of fish in Missouri, there must be quite a few other species in the Lake of the Ozarks alone. Paddlefish, also known as spoonbill, appear to be shark-like fish with a long snout. Because it hasn’t evolved much at all, it is considered one of the most interesting fish to research. The sport fish is not only valued for fun catch and release, but also for food! Paddlefish often swim continuously near the surface and don’t have a specific home base. Carp is another incredibly popular fish here at the Lake of the Ozarks. The average length for a common carp is around 16-31 inches.
