Easy Steps to De-Winterize Your Motorcycle

We’ve been having some beautiful, warmer weather at the Lake of the Ozarks. When the weather is warm, but not quite warm enough to get the boat out, there's only one thing left - get the bike out of the garage and enjoy it. At Surdyke Yamaha, we can provide you with the best motorcycles at the Lake of the Ozarks and with exceptional service as well. When you don't know what to do about a strange sound or sticky gears, we can help you find the reason and get you back out on the road. Here are a few things to remember as you start to pull your bike out and get it ready to hit the road.

Examine The Tires

Make sure you take a look at your tires and be sure that they are filled to the appropriate level. If you stored your bike on the floor of your garage, you'll also want to check the tread and make sure that the floor didn't disfigure them.

Recharge Your Battery

If part of your winterization process was to take the battery off and store it separately, it's time to bring it out. Wipe off any dust that may have been collected over the months, clean off the connectors, and reinstall the battery. If you used a battery tender, you'll want to wipe off the grease on each terminal/connector, and if necessary, top it off with distilled water.

Check The Lights

Take a peek at your headlights, brake lights, and tail lights. You'll want to make sure these are all in working order before getting out on the road - especially at night. If you need the bulbs replaced, don't forget to give us a call. We can help you with all of your maintenance needs, big or small.

Check The Fluids

If you didn't change the oil at the beginning of the winter, it's important to do so now. You won't want to take your bike out on old dirty oil. If you did change it, just make sure that it's topped off.

Check brake fluids as well, and add more if it’s low. The brake fluid should be drained and replaced every one to two years, and if you don't remember the last time you did change the fluid, now is a great time to change it.

Give Everything a Once Over

Check your bike to make sure that there are no critters or rodents who have taken up inhabitance in your bike. It may have become their winter home, but you'll want to make sure they don't stay there when you ride. If you covered the exhausts and air intake when you winterized your bike, you'll want to inspect everything thoroughly to make sure that nothing got left in by accident when you uncovered them.

Allow The Engine To Run

Before taking it out for a spin, let the engine run for a bit to warm it up. This will allow you to listen to it and make sure that everything is operating as it should. If you have any concerns, bring it in for motorcycle maintenance at the Lake of the Ozarks.
